Columnaris / Flexibacter / Myxobakteriose

The causes are various strains of Myxo- or Flexibacteria. Symptoms are whitish marks on the body and fins. These arise from the cluster-like accumulations of bacteria. Hence the name cluster bacteria. The cause is often inadequate water quality or extreme changes in water values. Although the disease is often mistaken for a fungal infection, it is in fact a bacterial infection. If a microscope is available, it is relatively easy to differentiate between a bacterial and a parasitic infection: most parasites can be clearly recognized as moving objects at a magnification of only 100-fold. On the other hand, bacteria are so small that they cannot be clearly seen even with 500-fold magnification. In simple terms: if you find clearly visible, moving objects, these are most likely to be parasites. If none can be found, a bacterial infection is more likely.
Columnaris bacteria can be successfully treated with JBL Furanol. Action must be taken quickly, as the infection often spreads very rapidly.
